Does an appliance repair tech need a license?
Few states license appliance repair. California requires anyone who repairs major home appliances to register as a service dealer. Federal EPA rules require Section 608 certification for any tech who works on equipment that holds refrigerant, like refrigerators, freezers and window AC units.

Good to know
- Think about replacing instead of repairing when an appliance is over about 10 years old or the repair is more than half the price of a new one (HomeGuide).
- About 2,900 clothes dryer fires happen in U.S. homes each year; not cleaning the dryer is the leading cause (U.S. Fire Administration).
Questions to ask an appliance repair tech before you hire
Ask these on the phone or at the estimate. A good pro answers every one without dodging.
- What's the service call fee, and does it go toward the repair?
- Will I get a written estimate before you start?
- Are the parts original (OEM) or aftermarket? What's the warranty?
- Do you work on my brand? Are you EPA 608 certified for refrigerant work?
- At this age, is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?
Red flags to watch for
Warning signs from consumer protection agencies and trade groups.
- No written estimate, or a bill higher than the estimate without your OK. Source
- They won't give back old parts or an itemized bill. Source
- They say your warranty is void because you used an independent shop. Federal law generally bars that. Source
- They work on refrigerant without EPA 608 certification. Source
